Sketches.

3 Initial Sketches.

In Procreate I created 3 Sketches but I ended selecting 'Fig 1.1 Sketch 1'

Fig 1.2 Sketch 2.

Fig 1.3 Sketch 3.

Final(Chosen) Sketch.

I added the rest of the letters for 'Fig 1.1 Sketch 1' in the end  deciding to go with capital letters as seen in 'Fig 2.1 ' and 'Fig 2.2'.

Digitalization.

Digitalizing Chosen Sketch.

I added the sketches to Adobe Illustrator and digitalized it.

Formatting.

I used the method Mr. Vinod and Mr. Max showed us to find all the heights so we can start exporting to Font Lab.

Exporting to Font Labs.

I copy pasted all the digitalized letters into Font Lab, kerned them and export them into the correct file to use in Illustrator to make the final poster.

Reflection

Experience

Overall this assignment was fairly simple and enjoyed it because I had more power over my designs as I made the typeface from scratch rather than needing to use already made typefaces.

Observation

I observed many fonts online trying to think of my own idea and doodled around till I found the concepts I wanted to sketch. I also observed Mr. Max' feedback he gave both me and my peers during tutorials.

Findings

I found out the many tedious consistencies your typeface needs including heights, angles, lengths and thickness'. How all these details  make sure all letters have the same design language.

Feedback.

Week 9:  Improve and complete my sketches for next week.

Week 10: Fix the counters in my letters and start digitalizing.

Week 11: Complete digitalization and start exporting letters into font lab.

Week 12: Format font in Font Lab and kern.

Week 13:  Fix the kerning and improve the layout of the poster.

Further Reading.

Typographic Design: Forms and Communication

I have selected the book 'Typographic Design: Forms and Communication' by Rob Carter, Philip B. Meggs, Ben Day, Sandra Maxa and Mark Sanders to read for my further reading.

Chapter 2 was the most fitting chapter for this task, this chapter is about 'The Anatomy of Typography'.

The Anatomy of Typography.
In this chapter we analyze letter forms by studying the parts of the letter forms such as the:
  • Capline.
  • Meanline.
  • x-height.
  • Baseline.
  • Beard line.
Fig 4.2 The parts of letterforms.

Another highlight of this chapter is the historic classification  of typefaces such as:
  • Old Style.
  • Italic.
  • Transitional.
  • Modern.
  • Egyptian.
  • Grotesque.
  • Neo-grotesque.
  • Humanist.
  • Geometric.
Other things learned in this chapter include typographic measurements, spatial measurements, weight changes, proportion, angle and elaboration.
