Overall, this module provided a collaborative and hands-on experience in developing a design solution for a real-world context. Working in a group, we explored ideas such as a public bookshelf, a reading tent, and reading accessories, all centred around eco-friendly design using reused materials. The process from initial brainstorming to field study and final presentation—helped strengthen my ability to work in a team, think critically, and apply design thinking in a practical setting.
The module followed a structured weekly progression. We began by forming groups and generating initial ideas, then refined our direction through feedback sessions with our lecturer, Mr. Fauzi, who guided us toward the theme of park reading. A key part of the process was our field study at Perdana Botanical Gardens, where we observed a reading community (KL Reads), took photographs, conducted interviews, and experienced the environment firsthand. These insights helped shape our decision to focus on improving an existing public bookshelf. Continuous feedback ensured our ideas remained practical and relevant.
Through this project, I learned the importance of research, observation, and user experience in design. The field study was especially valuable in understanding real user behaviour and identifying areas for improvement. I also gained insight into sustainable design by incorporating reused materials into our concepts. Developing the final outcome—complete with improvement proposals, material and price lists, sketches, mockups, and a poster—taught me that effective design solutions require both creativity and practicality, as well as clear communication of ideas.
