Creative Brand Strategy/ Bachelor of Design (Honors) in Creative Media/ Taylors University

Lecture Summary:

Week 1:

The first week introduced the semester brief, which focused on creating an original Mental Health Awareness campaign for Taylor's Counselling Club. The project was divided into three main phases: conducting research and situation analysis, developing the campaign’s brand identity, and applying the final concept through different campaign materials.

The main focus was understanding that an effective awareness campaign should not only provide information but also create meaningful change. The campaign should encourage conversations, reduce stigma, and provide support within the Taylor's community. Research into existing campaigns will help identify successful approaches, understand the target audience, and develop a strong creative direction.

Week 2:

The second week focused on the importance of strategy before moving into the design process. We learned that a successful campaign requires a clear foundation, where the brand’s purpose and goals guide all creative decisions.

The lecture introduced key components of brand strategy, including vision, mission, values, positioning, audience insights, personality, tone of voice, brand story, visual identity, touchpoints, and SWOT analysis. A major takeaway was that understanding the audience involves looking beyond basic demographics by considering their emotions, behaviours, and personal experiences. This allows the campaign to create a stronger connection and guide audiences through their journey from awareness to action.

Week 3:

During Week 3, the focus shifted towards preparing and finalising our campaign proposal and case study. Before beginning any design development, we were required to present our proposal within a 10-minute presentation and receive feedback from our lecturer.

The proposal covered 12 important sections, supported by research and references, including the problem statement, audience insights, brand strategy, positioning, values, personality, and visual direction. We also prepared visual references, campaign touchpoints, and a customer journey map to demonstrate how the audience would experience the campaign.

Week 4:

Week 4 focused on improving and refining the campaign proposal before progressing into the design stage. The importance of reviewing and confirming the campaign direction before creating final designs was reinforced.

We continued developing key areas of the proposal, including research findings, audience understanding, brand positioning, and creative direction. Supporting elements such as mood boards, campaign touchpoints, and customer journey mapping were refined to better communicate how the campaign would engage users and create a meaningful experience.

Reflection:

Experience:
Overall, I had a positive experience with this module as it helped me understand the importance of strategy behind successful branding. It showed me that branding is not only about creating visuals but also about building a clear purpose, message, and connection with the target audience. The module helped me develop a stronger understanding of how research and planning influence the final design outcome.

Observations:
This module followed a structured process where we started by understanding the foundations of brand strategy before moving into developing our own campaign. We explored areas such as brand purpose, vision, mission, values, positioning, audience insights, personality, tone of voice, and visual direction. I observed that every design decision needs to be supported by reasoning and research to create a brand that feels consistent and meaningful.

Findings:
Throughout this module, I discovered the importance of developing a strong strategy before creating visual elements. I learned that understanding the audience, defining the brand’s identity, and creating a clear direction helps produce more effective designs. The biggest lesson I gained was that successful branding requires a balance between creativity and strategic thinking, where every element should have a purpose behind it.
